Physical Education

Welcome To The Physical Education Department

Our belief is that education is concerned with the whole human being, a rounded education, and that every pupil has the ability to achieve something worthwhile or even to excel in some field. The main objective of the physical education programme, therefore, is to use the range of sports offered at the College to identify and develop pupils. Students are encouraged to learn how to excel in a broad range of physical activities, be physically active for sustained periods of time, engage in competitive sports and activities and lead healthy, active lives.

Physical Education Department: Aims

We as a department aim to:

  • develop confidence, motivation and the desire to become physically and socially competent

  • challenge students to take responsibility for their own health and well-being as well as improve their sporting ability

  • create physically literate and healthy students

Physical Education Department: Subject Overview

Key Stage 4

Exam PE

Taking part in physical activities or sports helps achieve and maintain a healthy body and lifestyle.  GCSE Physical Education gives you the opportunity to learn about how your body works, how to plan and lead a healthier lifestyle, and the factors that can affect your health.  You will gain an understanding of health, physical fitness and the role of the active leisure industry in providing opportunities to improve health and fitness.  You will perform in three physical activities or sports.

Key Stage 5

Pupils have the choice of 2 pathways:

GCE Physical Education

Our WJEC AS/A level Physical Education specification has been designed to allow learners to develop an appreciation of physical education in a wide range of contexts.

It is designed to integrate theory and practice with an emphasis on the application of theoretical knowledge.

BTEC NQF Level 3 Diploma in Sport

This vocational course enables you to learn about the theory behind sport in great depth and is equivalent to 2 GCEs. You will have the opportunity to gain experience for use in the workplace or as a stepping stone to higher education. The variety of subjects will enable you to study most areas of sport and will help you decide which field you wish to work towards.

Physical Education Department: Careers

Physical education lends itself to a range of careers in sports and fitness as well as other industries that you may not have considered before. For example, did you know that many nutritionists, physical therapists and chiropractors have a degree in PE? Some careers that you could consider doing with PE include:

  • Sports science

  • Sports coach/consultant

  • Sports policy at local and national level
